Habitat for Humanity Condo Project could be a Model to House Hundreds of Service Workers Affordably

Habitat for Humanity is developing a 50-unit affordable condo project in East Austin’s gentrifying 78702 ZIP code, near the Plaza Saltillo train station. This project aims to significantly increase affordable for-sale housing in the area, where there are currently very few such units. The project, which received a key zoning approval, benefits from a “super density bonus” ordinance that allows higher building heights and fewer parking requirements in exchange for more affordable housing. With 75% of the units dedicated to affordable housing, the condos will be priced between $125,000 and $175,000, offering interest-free mortgages for low-income buyers. The development will help address the city’s housing shortage by promoting density, particularly near transit hubs, and could serve as a model for other areas in Austin.
