A new 18-story hotel could soon rise on a downtown Austin parking lot at 17th and Lavaca streets. HRI Properties LLC has filed plans to develop a 214-room hotel at 1620-1624 Lavaca Street, near the Hampton Inn and El Mercado. The project cleared a key hurdle with the Austin Design Commission’s approval, allowing it to proceed under the city’s downtown density bonus program. The hotel will feature a rooftop pool and terrace with views of the Capitol, along with a ground-floor restaurant. The site is 0.2 acres, and the developers are seeking permission to increase the building’s height to 220 feet. The project adds to a busy hospitality boom in the downtown area, with several hotels under construction or in the pipeline.
