First Look: Habitat for Humanity’s Plan for 50-plus Condos in East Austin

Austin Habitat for Humanity is progressing with the 4th & Onion project, a six-story affordable condo development located at Fourth and Onion Streets in East Austin. This will be the nonprofit’s first multifamily housing project, aiming to offer 50+ affordable for-sale condos. The design features loft-style units with simple, durable materials like corrugated metal, and aims for a strong sense of community with vibrant stairs and direct access to street-level ground-floor units. The project will not include parking, as it’s near public transit and downtown. Prices will range from $125,000 to $175,000, with interest-free mortgages and homebuyer qualifications based on income. Construction is expected to start in late spring 2020, pending funding and partnerships.
