Daryl Kunik’s Latest Mixed-Use Project in Far East Austin Progresses Amid Neighborhood Concerns
Central Austin Management Group’s plan to develop 742 apartments and 535,000 square feet of commercial space for Austin’s creative community has advanced despite neighborhood concerns about gentrification in East Austin. At a Nov. 9 Planning Commission meeting, some residents opposed the project over fears of rising housing costs and insufficient community benefits, though the commission moved the rezoning request forward without a recommendation. The proposed development, spanning 21 acres off U.S. Highway 183, would include 10% affordable housing units, discounted commercial space for creatives, and a brewery tenant. The East MLK Neighborhood Plan Contact Team is negotiating benefits like financial contributions and onsite amenities, such as a child care center. The project, which aims to provide space for artists and businesses while addressing affordability, heads to the Austin City Council for review.
